Music Video Analysis
The song starts off with slow paced shots. There are wide shots of fields and runways with light poking through gaps creating sharp bits of light. There is a close up shot of Ellie as she sings to the camera 'We' which cuts to a wide shot of her on an open clear runway singing 'We don't have to worry about nothing.' The closeup is a point within the theory by John Stewart which states that the record label demand lots of closeups of the artist. This the cuts to a gate being broken into by young adults, this cuts to extreme close ups of body parts like feet and legs as the people are walking through this field that they broke into.
The next scene cuts to a dark place where a shadow can be seen dancing which is cutting back and forth with Ellie on the runway with the sunlight piercing in the background. The line 'We'll be raising our hands' matches the visuals as she raises her hands'. This again cuts back to the other narrative strand in the field where a group of people are running again it is quite slow paced. As the chorus comes in 'And we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn...' a party is occurring and the people are dancing to the beat of the song. The editing is also to the beat which is a convention of a music video stated by Andrew Goodwin.
As the group of adults begin to take stuff out their bags we can see they are lanterns. "When the light started out...', this matches to when the lanterns are in turn coming on. As the lanterns are in the background, Ellie has changed outfits into a lighter coloured outfit which matches the fact that there is going to be more light 'we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn..' This then matches with all the lanterns going on and the fire burning as smoke is being released. There is everyone on the runway as there is the lights on cut from a birds eye view of London in light to darkness. As she ends the song 'And we're gonna let it burn' it cuts to a view of the lights over a country using a birds eye view shots again but this time the lights morph into her Ellie Goulding sign.
