Defining The Audience

Audience's:

  • It is useful for institutions and academics to be able to build detailed accounts of how audiences are constructed.
  • Rather than seeing audiences as masses or in simple numerical terms, it is common practice to find ways of segmenting the audience.
  • This segmentation can be achieved both demographics and psychographics.

  • Mass- produced: made for the 'mass' of people. There is a downside to this, of course, in that it can also be interpreted as 'commercial' or 'trashy'.

  • Niche: A small target audience that is highly specific.

  • Alternative: Outside of the mainstream. Going against dominant ideology includes minority groups, perhaps with subversive values.

Demographic Segmentation:

  • This is where an audience is segmented according to various significant social criteria e.g. gender, class, race, sexuality.
  • We looked at the demographics of our target audience, however this has proved difficult as our main demographic is at school.

Psychographic Segmentation:

  • Also known as lifestyle profiling.
  • Combines a psychological profile of the consumer, with ideas about how they conducted their life in the market-place.
  • The various attitudes, values, beliefs and 'lifestyle' choices are sorted into a number of distinctive categories which are used to predict consumption. VALS, the Values Attitudes and Lifestyles classification system id probably the best known of the psychographic profiling systems.

Teenage VALS:

  • TRENDIES - they crave the attention and admiration of their peers.
  • INNOVATERS - those who wish to make their mark.
  • Puritans - Wish to feel virtuous
  • Rebels - Who wish to make the world in their own image...
  • Groupies - Who just want to be accepted...
  • Drifters - Who are not sure what they want...
  • Drop-Outs - Who shun commitment...
  • Traditionalists -  Who want things to stay as they are...
  • Utopians - Who want the world to be a better place...
  • Cynics - Who have something to complain about...
  • Cowboys - Who want EASY MONEY...

From an understanding of the values and lifestyles we can clearly see that our band will target innovators and trendys and possibly rebels. As we are creating a new indie band it is important that people feel they connect with them and be the first to like them, therefore appealing to the rebels and innovators. In order to enhance the notion they are organic and we will focus heavily on the live performance and in order to sell them to the trendys we will focus on the que of people outside waiting to see them. Thus, making them desirable.

The Animatic - Story board

What have I learnt?

I learnt that most shots on here will be different to the ones in our actual music video as a lot of these pictures last for around 5/6 seconds which is a long time. Therefore, this will need changing by adding in different shots and using quick cuts. The way in which I am going to this is by making sure we are using more locations in which will enable us to include more shots in our music video. Another way in which I am going to make sure there are more shots is by focusing on each band member playing their instruments with close ups and wide shots.

Targets:

I need to make sure that I have all of this in my planning of each shot for my music video so I am organised and I know what I need to do. As well as this, It is good to know for next time so I have everything under control.

Cast For Our Music Video

Cast list for our music video

Lead singer:

Sam Steinberg- This was decided because we need a main singer who will relate to the audience is able to gain a high female audience. We believe this will help that and will be a positive move for out mad as we want to be getting as high of a following for our band as we can.

Drummer:

Katie Fisch- The reason why we believed Katie was the right choice when we selected her to be our drummer was because we felt it was different and unique to have an attractive women as are drummer. We feel as if this will get people to look at our band as there are not a lot of bands where the drummer is a women.

Guitarist:

Rob Elman- Rob will be our guitarist for our band and this is because its useful having a young, good looking guitarist playing as it makes our band look very up to date and cool. It will hopefully add to the following and attract girls as they could come across as attracted to him and will want to watch the music video if he is starring in them as the guitarist.

Account Of Shoot Day

Account of shoot day 1

Before we started getting the camera together our group had a discussion and came to a conclusion that it would be impossible to complete the filming of our music video with one of the actors that was to be in it due to the fact Freddy Kramer was unable to miss lessons to film with us, so we came to a decision that we would use a female for a video to add a twist which could also create a wider audience group. By having a mix gender band, it could be comparable to the likes of bands such as 'Paramore' and 'The White Stripes'.

This shoot day consisted of the band practising in the studio, it would be a part in the video where the band had come together to try and perfect there song, tweeting it and tuning it so it just right. We manage to get. This required us not to use any specific outfits or props as it was a casual enjoyable filming section of the video. We got individual shots with wides angles and close ups of faces and hands on instruments as well as the lead singer recording the song in the studio.
We were able to film many times to perfect the timing of the song and the actors timings and hitting and playing the instruments at specific times.

On the downside, the room/studio we filmed in did have leak in a specific corner which could us from continuing to film in there hut i think we have a large variety of shots to add into the video which should allow us to focus on other locations and parts of the film.

I was filming all the shots. I decided that we would do all the shots in the studio as that is were the band would be rehearsing as the drum kit and the instruments were all ready. I was organising were each band member would be standing in our wide shot of all the members rehearsing together. As well as this, I was the one making the decision on which shots we would be using.

In our band:

Sam Steinberg is the lead singer
Katie Fisch is the drummer
Robert Elman is the guitarist

Change of Ideas

Change of actors:

On our first day of shooting, one of our actors in the band who was our lead guitarist was not available to perform on this day. Therefore, we then decided to use another person to act in our band as we needed to start filming on this day. We then decided that using a girl would be a perfect replacement for the band. The idea came from thinking of other bands and the first thought that came to my mind were 'The White Stripes'. This was an American band made up of two members one being the lead singer and guitarist who was a male and a female on the drums. They had a very organic and rare star image - firstly as a stereotypical rock band including more than two members and mainly full of males. As well as this, they were always specific in which they wore during live performances. They would only wear red, black or white clothing.

Another band similar to ours are 'Paramore'. The band members are all wearing different clothes and are stood together. We can see their band's star image as a rock band due to the female band member's dyed hair. This is the same as ours as we are using a female in our band who is the drummer.
