Analysing audience data for our thriller movie

From looking at this data off IMDb on the film Se7en we can see males where the main voters and had an average of 8.7 (641875 people) compared to Females with an average of 8.5 (127955). Due to this, we may need to think what young males would like to see for example an attractive women.

By looking at the data of Gone Baby Gone we can see males once again males dominant the data with 135950 votes and an average of 7.7 compared to females with an average of 7.6 and 22621. This means we should make our film that males will like. Males under 18 have the highest average of 8.0. From this data we should make our thriller films audience targeted at males considering they are the main voters.

By looking at this data, we can see many different outcomes. There are more male voters (342483) with an average of 7.9 compared to women voters (56000) with an average of 7.8. However, females under the age of 18 has the highest average of 8.2. As a result of this, we need to include things that young females will find intriguing to watch as well as, an attractive women to interest males.

Mood Board

The mood board has helped us visualise are ideas as we are have got a load of pictures together which are related to our film which also demonstrates what will be shown and seen throughout the film. The mood board helps explain the narrative of our film as we have used specific images to represent what will be happening, when it is set and who may be involved. This includes, images of women on a night out, a taxi with a scary looking driver, dark settings. The tone of the mood board is dark and miserable. We see this through the images due to the fact, most of them are pictured at night. The tone of our mood board relates to our sub-genre of psychological thriller as we can see it is gloomy, dark and it is similar to other psychological thriller such as Seven.

The main difference between English and American films is the budget they have to spend on making the films.

British film often tends to focus on real life situations – mainly working class people to show the harsh reality of life in urban Britain. They are usually problematic and tell it how it really is. They often include swearing and drug abuse also. However, in extreme contrast to this, some British films are fantasy, include made up locations and exotic storylines, for example Harry Potter, however, Harry Potter still includes hardship, bullying and the struggles of life. In British film, they tend to show each area of the country differently in according to reality, and represent their lifestyle in films.
American films generally focus on the ‘American dream’/fairy-tale ending storylines. American film companies tend to have large budgets in which to produce their films from, so more often than not, CGI, exotic locations and a large amount of advertising is often used. American films offer the audience a sense of escapism, because, unlike British film, American film does not show the harsh struggles of reality, rather quite the opposite. They are often referred to as ‘Blockbusters’ and have covered every genre there is to offer, unlike British film. American films get their funding from the production companies, often known as the ‘Big six’ – Universal, Warner Brothers, 20 th Century Fox, Paramount, Disney and Columbia – which own the majority of the smaller production companies too, for example, Universal Studios owns 67% of Working Title films.

Thriller Interview

I learnt that most people around ages 15-24 all like thrillers because they are exciting, gripping and intense.
Different ages ranged gave us different answers for example, many people aged over 40 where not bothered if any actor was attractive, they just wanted a good actor involved in the film. Most of their favourite subgenre of thriller was psychological, whereas most people aged 15-24 likes crime or action.
Everyone likes to see 'jumpy moments' as they make the film interesting and intense. Many people also wants to see in a thriller, action, violence, blood and sexual scenes. Some responses differ from the girls to the boys. The boys were into violence, horrors and crime whereas the girls all liked romances and rom-com.
None of the results really surprised me apart from the people aged 40+ they weren't bothered by how attractive the actors were.
