Evaluation Task 3

Evaluation Task 2

1 - What other bands are similar to yours and how have you influenced from them?

We’ve noticed similarities between our band The Front Runners and bands like Arctic Monkeys, Kings Of Leon, Queens Of The Stone Age and The Killers.

However, we were also inspired by the style of different bands, shaping the fashion style in a similar way. We looked at how these artists created a smart, unique authentic look through the clothes they wore. They also presented a cool but smart look, suggesting to us that their image and appearance is not the most important thing in their success. We wanted to create an image which would make us stand out and be an organic band, which meant conforming to this style and the way that these artists dressed in order to help create an effective star image.

2 – Why did you focus solely on a live performance element for our music video?

The reason we wanted to do this is so we can sell them as an organic band. We felt that the live footage was the stagnate part of our footage so far and as it is a rock band therefore, we are going to use the new format to launch them as a new live band. We are adding to the organic nature of the artists and selling their star appeal as real musicians that are authentic performers not like a pop synthetic pop band.

To give them a feel of a live performance we are going to give them a retro television visual programme and this will help sell them as an authentic band to the audience. We have looked at Ed Sullivan show and we are going to focus on a live television broadcast to introduce the band.

3- what is the meaning of The Front Runners star image and how does it appeal to their target audience?

The star image does appeal to the target audience, this is because the target audience when doing our survey monkey discussed whether our artist liked the concept.  From this the star image clearly appealed to the target audience of teenagers roughly 15-25. This age range discussed how they like artist who are unique and also liked bands such as the Arctic Monkeys.

The people in the survey monkey in our target audience liked the songs, which come from a similar genre and style image. The target audience also liked the organic aspect of our band and therefore the deep planning to help make the artist stand out.
The Front Runners image stands for authenticity, honesty, being true to yourself and working hard which would appeal to our target audience as it would encourage them to try their best and work hard while staying true to who they are by being honest and open. This is something that young people in today’s society struggle to do and something that The Front Runners image hopefully encourages in young people by showing them what hard work and not changing because society wants you to can achieve.

4 - What is it about your band that makes them unique?

Our band is unique; this is because they show their own personality through their live performances, which is different to other artists. They are an organic band and have a unique selling point. This unique selling point is shown through their clothes they were and their live performances.

The artists dress sense is simple which again makes him stand out because they want to be different to modern day rock bands.
Our band is also unique unlike other bands such as, The Killers, Queen of The Stone Age and The Foo Fighters because they are a fairly young band. This means that he is able to attract and appeal to a younger target audience. This is unusual for rock bands who often find it very difficult to sign to a label and become successful, performing in pubs. The fact that he is young means that they can produce music that appeals to the younger audience and it about life as a young person.

5 - In relation to their target audience, what would you say the genre of their music is and how does it appeal to them?

After looking at the feedback from our Survey Monkeys our target audience is probably around the young adult mark. Maybe 15 to 30? They’d be students or casual workers so they could possibly be seeking independence. As well as this, the amount of female fans will increase due to our good-looking band members. The Front Runners style of music gives us something that people can relate to without being over-crowded with common pop devices like autotune. We know that they real and authentic and not constructed, so they can help people be independent through their music as he’s being real.

6- How do they website, digipak and music video work together to reinforce his star’s image and sell your artist?

The authenticity is shown throughout the products through the use of the live performance and the way they dress. This is a very important aspect of their star image and is something that we felt needed to be addressed and enforced in all aspects of their promotion. If this were not done, then their image would not be used effectively to sell him as an artist.

The website and digipak and music video all have a similar theme. This is because in the music video within the performance element it is a retro black and white theme. The lighting on the Website and social media sites are also very similar with a balck and white theme. This is because, black is also a dark colour and we wanted it to represent to rock as well so there is that connection.

This is important when selling The Front Runners image to the target audience and public. Moreover, on the webise the main colours are black and white but we do also have a luminous green colour in some of the sub-headings just to add to the effect of it too make it grab the audicnes attention. Furthermore, we wanted a link between all 3 of the platforms but we felt the digipak would look cooler and more different if we used a red hint over the black and white main theme. In all of the images, The band are all wearing similar clothing; which is a smart them

Our Lead Singer Star image to Others

Our lead singer:

Alex Turner:

Iggy Pop:

Here you can see our lead singer Sam, the Arctic Monkeys lead singer Alex Turner and the rock legend Iggy Pop who was in The Stooges. Our lead singer doesn't have the typical rock star look, in our music video he is wearing a suit which is similar to one of the photos of Alex Turner highlighting we were inspired by his look. They also have a similar hair stair which is a clean cut this also isn't your typical rock star look. Our lead singer also has a very relaxed and cool look which is a very good star image for a lead singer of a rock band. We see Alex Turner is smoking. This symbolises him as someone who is rebellious which is a very good star image of a rock star, our lead singer doesn't have any photos like that as we haven't gone for the rebellious star image, we wanted to sell our bands image as authentic and organic. When looking at Iggy Pop, we see a stereotypical rock star. Long hair and he has his top off while performing. He has very different star image to our lead singer however we were inspired by him when filming our music video. In our music video our lead singer is extremely passionate. We see this when he kicks down the microphone stand, dancing around the stage and throwing his suit jacket into the crowd.

Feedback from album cover

After developing our digipak even further we got feedback on our most updated version of it. The majority of the feedback all indicated that the two different colours used on it was a bad idea and needed changing. However, they all liked the pictures chosen and used were effective and positive for the audience.
After this feedback we decided to keep the photos we were using as people liked those, however we would change the colour of it and stick to one of them. This actually led to the digipak looking more organic and helped represent our band as organic even more. It was said that the track list was wonky and therefore we adjusted it to be straight and arranged perfectly next to each other. This resulted in the digipak looking more professional.

Website Write up

Website:

When looking at our website for our band we wanted to represent them as an organic and real band. This is why we have gone for the black and white style to give them that authentic image. We have gone for this type of theme throughout all our products including the music video and the digipak. We wanted the star image to come across on the website showing they are a simple band who just want to produce good music for their fans. As well as not having abstract colours to draw in fans as we focused on the music side of our band to increase our fanbase.  Our front page is different to many other bands website similar to ours. We wanted a big bold photo of our band to draw the attention of the audience to the band so they become more recognisable and well known. This is because we want to sell their image as a real and authentic band so we had a black ad white photo of the band in their smart clothes. This draws all the attention to the band in which we wanted rather than having pop ups on the front page. We kept it very simple by having the information that may be needed by the fans on the top of the website where they can easily click on the tab and directs them to the necessary area. Our photo gallery consists of several pictures from our live performances to keep the audience close with the band so they can see what the performance was like. There is a media tab which gives the fans an opportunity to listen to the bands new music, view the latest music video and also buy the bands new album. The next tab is there upcoming tour dates and on this age gives the fans an opportunity to get a link which goes straight onto Ticketmster to buy tickets for the latest tour. The next page is for the contact information which contains both contact details for the manager; Eric Buckley as well as the booking team; represented by Phil Duke. The tab for the biography leads to a page where there area few paragraphs talking about the band members and where they came from and how they met, how there latest song Use Somebody helped sell out shows across the country and could potentially have changed there lives forever. This will help sell the band as being organic and real as it shows them as being a normal group of guys who want to release music to their fans. This is there brand image as is what is getting them a huge increase in fanbase. The last tab which is the merchandise of the band to help gain extra income for the band members and another way of connecting them more with the fans. This is done by selling variety of products from clothes to Iphone cases to even jigsaw puzzles.

Account Of Editing 2 (New Music Video)

Account Of Editing 2:

1. The main chorus build up consisted of the drummer however we didn't have shot of him drumming so I decided to two use the same shot twice re running it so it was in time with the build up before the final solo to where chorus started.

2. While filming we also decided to shoot some high angle shots from the theatre balcony however we realised when editing that the band was to one side and half the stage was black so we the CROP tool to cut as much out as possible to focus on the band

3. Again for the next part all that was necessarily needed was to implement the already cut shots into position with the following.

Further to this the only thing required was to add the shots in that were missing no editing techniques were used excepted implementing them to time so the words match the mouthing of the lyrics which was implemented on Premiere Pro

Account Of Editing 1 (New Music Video)

Account Of Editing:

During our shoot days we film over 300 individual clips, some useful and some not but the most challenging thing was going through each clip and working out which ones to keep and discard which took and awful amount of time, this however made sure we had the best footage available  to put into video and make it the best we could, we did however keep some clips that were similar and at the highest quality possible to compare how they fitted in with the rest of the clips either side of it. Finally we did take extra shots for our film but those parts never the cut as we realised the film would become long winded and slightly boring for the viewer. However i did include some timelapses  which i shot on my Mobile device to add some effect to our project.

As a group we also came to a conclusion that it was better that we made the whole video black and white which meant researching and understanding how to adjust our clips normal to black and white. To make the shot black and white throughout the editing process, we used the effect Tint which took away the colour from every clip.
on the simple cutting or speeding up process was used and little special effects needed demonstrating a real organic feel

1. Go through every clip and get rid of the rubbish and keep all the good parts we could use as clips

2. Find footage of girls queuing up to see a band but a band less well known at a small venue

3. While the instrumental introduction went on we decided to cut between the band setting up through a time-lapse and clips of the girls queuing

4. We then tackled the start which was lining up the close shot with the lyrics making sure they were perfectly time

5. The next task to complete was just adding in the shot we had already cut up to the chorus part which was madd up of many quick cuts from different angles to give a different perspective and keep the video interesting

Website Feedback

When we first set out our website and started to add features in we got some feedback from other pupils and our target audience to see what they thought of it so far.
From the feedback we received people felt it was easy to use, and go to different tabs on the website which is a positive thing. However, we knew we needed to make improvements as it wasn't complete. The majority of people said it lacked pictures and that we should add a picture gallery, and more merchandise and colour on to the website in which we did so after receiving this feedback.

Comparing our Website to others

Layout:

On our website, we have 7 tabs: HOME, BIO, PHOTO GALLERY, MEDIA, TOUR DATES, CONTACT, MERCH. Whereas 'The Queens Of Stone Age' website they have near enough most of these tabs on their homepage. However, the have little icons of different social media accounts in which if you click on them you get sent to their page on that social media platform. They also have another tab called 'Store'. This is where, they sell their own music as well as merchandise and accessories. On our homepage we have a picture of our band and the name of the band.

Positioning

On the first page, we wanted a picture of our band that will stand out to anyone that will click on the website. Therefore, we decided to use a black and white image against a dark grey/black background This was also to express the bands start image as an authentic and real band. This was done through using a dark shade as the background and having the band in the clothing they were for their gigs as this represents them being a live authentic band. We chose an image of them all together showing they are close and friends but also serious with what they do and how they want to pursue their careers staring at the viewer which again gives a personal feel to the website. For a new band this is necessary as they have to expand their target audience. This is completely different layout to the 'Arctic Monkeys' as on their home page they don't have any pictures representing or demonstrating who are the members of the band. However, the Arctic monkeys are an estabished band thereofore they do not need this.

Font& Colour:

For our home page, we made the font for our title (the band name) to be in big bold font which we did. This grabs the audience and viewers attention and you will be immeditly attracted to the title in which you would see the name of the band. However, the sub-heading and the tabs at the top are all in a different font. We felt this was a rock style rather than a pop style font such as on 'The Killers' website. They are a well established band and that could be the reason why they haven't got a rock style font as they don't need to sell their star image.
The colour scheme of the website is black, white with a hint of green on some pages. The black and white give the website a classy feel as well as illustrating them as a rock band as they are dark colours. it also sows they are an authentic band as they are natural organic colours. This is similar to 'Biffy Clyro' website however they have used the same colours but the other way round. They decided to use black writing against a white background.

Album Cover

Digipack For Our Band

We chose to change the text to white as we thought that it was much easier to read and also fit our theme better as it matches with out band logo. We also included the record label logo on the CD so the audience is able to see what music company the band is represented by. To create synergy between our digipak and music video, we used still shots taken from some of our edited footage. We chose shots that we felt best reflected ideas from our album such as being organic. On the inside we chose to use a picture taken on the day of filming our music video of our band members which is aimed to represent their love for music and making music. The tint of red is done to appeal more to the public when the album is on the shelves.

Development of our Digipak

This was our second attempt at the digitak. After the feedback we received in the first attempt we changed it up completely. We decided to change the front cover to this picture which is also used on the front page of our website. We felt by using the same photo there is a connection between our products in which the audience would see the band. Moreover, as we wanted to sell the band as an organic and authentic rock band we put it in black and white to give it a retro look. This is also similar to are other products as our music video is a live performance with a black and white tint to give it this retro feel as well as the website being in black and white. I felt that if all our products was similar colour it was be effective and a lot easier to sell the star image of the band being an organic and authentic band. We used a different picture on the inside of the cover in which was a more relaxed photo to demonstrate another side to the band. We also added the bands logo on the inside so that when the fans open up the album they will see the logo which we automatically grab their attention. Finally, on the back, we added our track list and put in the corner the record label are band has been signed to.

How we will film our music video

How we are going to film our video

We are going to have the song playing in the background. And we will film everything from a wide so we can see all the band members. Further to this we will film close ups of every band member conducting their job. We will also get close ups of the instruments in use in particular parts of the song. To produce a high quality viewing perspective we will use a lot of quick cuts in time of the beat. We will also have the privilege of using two cameras to enhance the shot. This will allow us to have two shots at the same time.
The use of low angle and high angle aswell and side shots and close ups will be the main make up of our video but also the passion and hardwork of the performers will rub off into the performance which was one of the problem from our previous run through

To make sure we get the best use out the camera, we will also take advantage of the balcony in the theatre where we can get some high angle shots looking down at the band, which will add another dimension
The video will be filmed in one location making it easier and will make understanding the video easier
